Oxford failed to catch the playoff chasing teams yesterday when they went down 2-1 at lowly Cambridge, that after being 1-0 up at the break when Steve Basham-who was starting in place of Craig Davies-latched on to a mistake from the Cambridge keeper and then cut in from the right and shot past the helpless Ruddy with his left foot from the edge of the area, that was in the 1st minute of added time and was a shock ending to a very dismal 1st half which saw the Real U's lose top striker Tommy Mooney with a badly cut head, he had to have stitches and the injury was too severe to re-enter the field, he was replaced by Craig Davies who looked lively in the 2nd half, but kept the ball too much.
Yet again with the U's it was bad mistakes that lost us the game and with the scores level at 1 each going into the 3 minutes of added time at the end you could see the U's snatching it again, but all the play in them final minutes were at the wrong end and with the U's giving away silly free kicks constantly in front of their own goal they had to pay the heavy price, yet the U's missed chance after chance in the 2nd half after the dismal 2 shots on target in the 1st, Davies, Raponi, Roget and Woozley all guilty of missing the net when it was harder to miss.
At the end it was delight for Cambridge and judging by the reaction at the final whistle it was like they had won the league let alone a game, Horacio Rodriguez just shrugged it off with calmed disappointment and looked forward to the next game.
Ruddy the Cambridge keeper then incensed the U's fans behind his goal by what looked like a gesture with his hand after they had given him stick all afternoon as he left his goal at the end, not the best thing to do after you have won and with a police unit watching closely in the corner of the ground, Complaints were made, but that will be the end of it and Oxford fans will again get a bad reputation for nothing!.
